An unidentified source of Evangel University Akaeze, Abakiliki in a message to Daniel Regha a social media influence on twitter disclosed a student of the institution died in the state as a result if medical negligence from medical practitioner, of the Federal Teaching Hospital.
The source bemoaned the school lackadaisical attitude to the unfortunate event, revealing that there were policemen and the school CSO at the incident scene but rather than detain the culprit for proper investigation, he was let go.
Her narration go thus: “A student was involved in an accident at the school junction and was rushed to Fetha (Federal Teaching Hospital Abakiliki) for treatment.
“Tragically, the negligence of the nurses at Fetha Hospital exacerbated the situation, ultimately leading to the loss of the student’s life. Despite being rushed to the hospital, the nurses failed to attend to him promptly. It was final year students who intervened and administered CPR when the victim’s pulse stopped.
“Shockingly, even after the student’s pulse returned, the nurses still did not provide adequate care, and the student sadly succumbed to his injuries.
“As students, we’re outraged and heartbroken by this incident. We demand accountability and urgent attention to the subpar medical care provided by Fetha Hospital.
“The students have been pleading for road bumps, school bus Park (cause the accident happened along the road while he was trying to board a bus to Enugu). We also pleaded for the school junction to be a check point whereas the cars can slow down when they get to that junction.
“But…everything will die down in few hours and the school management will go back to normal.
“This is not the first time a student is dying at that junction and it’s not the second, we are tired of losing lives.
“We can’t even speak up in school due of fear of EXPULSION and SUSPENSION and in the statement released by the school management, they said that they can’t expel or suspend a student for speaking up, that’s a big lie!
“We the students are soliciting the help of Nigerians to plead to the government to help us with the structures listed above
“And also, his death would have been avoidable if he was given proper first aid at the school clinic before being taken to the hospital, because the accident happened in front of the school.
“Now, the school clinic is nothing to write home about, occupying only cheap tablets and drip that doesn’t work, and a nurse that doesn’t care about your health. If only the school clinic can have proper facilities and equipment, it would have preserved him till he was taken to the hospital.
“Do you know that most of the students bring drugs from home and give to nursing to administer to them when they are sick?
“This is how bad the school clinical system each, yet they charge every student clinical fee but yet we don’t get any reasonable treatment.
“The CSO of the school and some police men were present when the accident happened, some boy students rushed to the scene to hold the guys that bashed Vector (that is the lexus car) only for the CSO to chase them away and nobody heard from the guys.” The source added
