New Zealand Return to the World Cup After 16 Years’ Absence

New Zealand have booked their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This will be the Kiwis’ third appearance at a World Cup and their first since South Africa 2010.

A 3-0 win over New Caledonia in front of their home fans at Eden Park, Auckland, helped them secure qualification. Second-half goals from Michael Boxall, Kosta Barbarouses, and Elijah Just sealed the victory.

They are the first country from Oceania to qualify automatically without having to play an intercontinental playoff, following FIFA’s decision to grant the small confederation a direct spot due to the newly expanded World Cup.

New Zealand become the fifth team to qualify, joining the USA, Mexico, Canada, and Japan.
