A Lagos Mobile Court has sentenced two individuals to three months’ custodial imprisonment for orchestrating a violent and coordinated mob attack on the operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authorit (LASTMA) while they were carrying out their lawful duties.
According to the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, who revealed in a statement that the two individuals, commercial bus drivers, Mohammed Musa and Muhammed Nasara, orchestrated the mob attack on LASTMA officials performing their lawful duties.
The statement read, “The attackers were apprehended following a brazen and unprovoked assault that occurred on April 7, in the vicinity of LASTMA Central District (Zone 9, Victoria Island) located in the Victoria Island/Lekki corridor of Lagos.
“The unfortunate incident was triggered by the legitimate apprehension of a white commercial minibus SMK 742 YJ (korope) by LASTMA officials for obstruction-related traffic infractions around the Mekwen Bridge, inward Flag House, he added.
“In a show of blatant defiance, the minibus driver mobilized a group of fellow commercial operators, who arrived in two other minibuses (GGE 995 YF), and together launched a premeditated, vicious attack on the officials,” Adebayo explained, Bakare-Oki explained.
He condemned the assault in strong terms, reaffirming LASTMA’s zero-tolerance stance on attacks against its personnel.
He disclosed that swift intervention by security personnel led to the arrest of two of the assailants, who were immediately arraigned before the Lagos Mobile Court in Oshodi.
