U.S. Deports Former Mexican Governor After Corruption Conviction

The United States has deported Tomás Yarrington, the former governor of Mexico’s Tamaulipas state, after he served a prison sentence for money laundering. Yarrington, who governed from 1999 to 2004, was convicted of accepting $3.5 million in bribes and using these funds to purchase luxury properties in the U.S.

Yarrington had been sentenced to nine years in prison in the United States after being arrested in Italy in 2017 at the request of US and Mexican authorities.

After serving his sentence in the U.S., Yarrington has been deported and handed over to Mexican authorities. Upon his return, he was transferred to the Altiplano prison in the State of Mexico, where he faces additional charges related to money laundering and other alleged crimes committed during his governorship

Although Yarrington had been accused in 2009 of alleged links to drug trafficking and money laundering, authorities have not detailed the crimes against him in Mexico.
