The Borno State Police Command has arrested 30-year-old teacher Bukar Modufor the alleged brutal assault of a 10-year-old pupil, Bashir Babaji, in the Bulabulin Alajeri area of Maiduguri.

According to reports, the incident occurred on March 16, 2025, in a viral video which shows Modu repeatedly flogging the young boy, an act that has been condemned by child rights advocates and the general public.

Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Kenneth Daso, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Monday.

According to him, the suspect allegedly punished the boy for absconding from class.

“The Borno State Police Command wishes to inform the general public of the arrest of one Bukar Modu, 30 years old, in connection with a viral video showing the physical abuse of a minor in the Bulabulin Alajeri area along Baga Road, Maiduguri,” the statement read.

The PPRO has assured the public that the case will be handled with the utmost seriousness, emphasizing their commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of children. They have also called on the public to report any instances of child abuse or maltreatment to the appropriate authorities.

“The victim has since been taken to the hospital for medical examination and evaluation while the suspect remains in custody. The case is still under investigation and will be charged to court upon its conclusion,” he added.
