Manchester United Qualify for Europa League Last Four After Historic Comeback Against Olympique Lyon

Manchester United are into the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League after pulling off a remontada against Olympique Lyon.

United won the tie in Amorim time (Fergie time), 5-4 after extra time, and 7-6 on aggregate to advance to another European semi-final.

Manchester United went 2-0 up in the first half courtesy of goals from Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot. The Red Devils were cruising, dominating the tempo of the game and creating chances, but things changed when Corentin Tolisso pulled one back for Lyon. Six minutes later, Nicolás Tagliafico levelled the tie for the French side.

United were handed a lifeline when Lyon captain Tolisso was shown a second yellow card for a challenge on Leny Yoro, reducing the visitors to ten men.

With the Old Trafford crowd silenced and loud French voices echoing through the stadium, Lyon pushed hard to avoid extra time. But the defensive duo of Yoro and Maguire stood firm to bail the Red Devils out.

A long pep talk by Paulo Fonseca during the break paid off, as Rayan Cherki gave Lyon the advantage four minutes into extra time. Nine minutes later, Alexandre Lacazette doubled their lead from the spot, making it 4-2 on the night and 6-4 on aggregate.

All hope seemed lost, and tears began to flow around Old Trafford—until United were handed another lifeline in the 114th minute. Casemiro was brought down in the box, and Bruno Fernandes stepped up to calmly convert the penalty.

With only a glimmer of hope remaining, Kobbie Mainoo ignited the home fans in the 120th minute with a clutch finish, sending Lucas Perri the wrong way. Casemiro was the architect of the goal.

Just a minute later, Casemiro sent a long ball into the box that met Harry Maguire, and the England international was perfectly placed to head it home—sending Manchester United into the Europa League semi-finals.

The match will go down as one of the greatest in Europa League history, with both sets of fans going through every possible emotion.

Manchester United have been known for comebacks since the days of the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson, but it’s been a long time since fans witnessed something like this unfold. Club manager Ruben Amorim was seen smiling and jumping with joy for the first time on the touchline as Manchester United boss after Maguire’s winner.

Sir Alex Ferguson was also proud of the team’s performance, applauding the players for their outstanding effort on the night.
