A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Istanbul today, originating in the Sea of Marmara, approximately 40 kilometers southwest of the city. The tremor, occurring at 12:49 p.m. local time, had a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, amplifying its impact across the region.
While no major structural damage has been reported, over 150 people sustained injuries, primarily from panic-induced falls while evacuating buildings. The quake was felt in multiple provinces, including Tekirdag, Yalova, Bursa, Balikesir, and as far south as Izmir, 550 kilometers away. Several aftershocks followed, the strongest measuring 5.3.
Authorities urge residents to stay clear of buildings and remain in open areas as a precaution. Given Istanbul’s proximity to a major fault line, concerns persist over the potential for a larger seismic event in the future.
