CAF representatives had a challenging start to the FIFA Club World Cup, with only one African team managing to secure a win after the first round of matches.
Inter Miami 0-0 Al Ahly
Twelve-time CAF Champions League winners Al Ahly were the better side on paper against Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami but couldn’t make their chances count. Despite dominating spells, they failed to convert opportunities into goals, settling for a goalless draw.
Flamengo 2-0 ES Tunis
Brazilian giants Flamengo outplayed Tunisian side ES Tunis from start to finish, forcing them to sit deep for most of the game. ES Tunis struggled to get into the game as Flamengo controlled possession and tempo throughout.
Ulsan 0-1 Mamelodi Sundowns
Mamelodi Sundowns were dominant against South Korea’s Ulsan Hyundai and deservedly came out on top. The South Africans impressed with their attacking play and should have won by a wider margin, with a three-goal victory reflecting their performance more accurately.
Manchester City 2-0 Wydad Casablanca
Wydad Casablanca’s new signings Bart Meijers and Guilherme Ferreira de Oliveira impressed at the back, but it wasn’t enough to stop the reigning UEFA Champions League winners. Despite the 2-0 loss, the Moroccan side gave a good account of themselves, showcasing quality passing and creating decent chances. However, they were unable to convert those chances into goals.
