CBS Cancels ‘The Late Show’, Audiences Wondered If The Show Was Cancel For Political Reasons

CBS has announced the cancellation of ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’, set to conclude in May 2026

This is coming three days after Colbert called out CBS parent company Paramount for its $16M settlement with Trump.

Colbert admitted he only learned of the network’s decision “last night,” leaving fans stunned by the sudden news: “I’m not being replaced. This is all just going away.”

Top CBS executives said in a statement announcing the news said: “This is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night, it is not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.”

The series will end in May 2026, with CBS calling it a “purely financial decision.” The cancellation will be ending the entire franchise after nearly 30 years on air.

Senator Adam Schiff in a post had wondered if the show was cancelled for political reason and demand that the public have the right to know, his post read: “Just finished taping with Stephen Colbert who announced his show was cancelled. If Paramount and CBS ended the Late Show for political reasons, the public deserves to know. And deserves better.”

While political scientist and contributing editor for the Atlantic, Norman Ornstein hinted that the decision was taken as a result of blackmail, he wrote: “I have said many times on this site that for 30 years I was an election analyst for CBS News.

“I was so proud of what we did. To watch the news division and the broader network go into the toilet over. The last decade was painful and frustrating. But canceling Colbert?

“His is the most highly rated by far of the late night ones. There’s only one reason to do this, and we know what it is.

“The same reason that this disgraceful excuse for a network succumbed to blackmail from Trump over the 60 Minutes interview. It is a terrible sign for democracy.” Ornstein added.

However, Fox News contributor and political commentator Mollie Hemingway expresses relief at the news on her X post: “Our long national nightmare is about to be over, y’all.”
