An Akron police officer is back in federal court after he repeatedly punched Terrell Battles during a 2024 traffic stop, sending him to the hospital with a broken nose, concussion and lacerations to the face.
A bodycam footage from a June 28, 2024, traffic stop in Akron, Ohio shows Terrell Battles was dragged from his car, punched, and suffered a broken nose by Officer Warren Spragg after refusing to exit.
Lawsuit filed on June 27, 2025 in the Northern District of Ohio, accuses officer Warren Spragg of assault and battery, false arrest, excessive force and negligence.
The City of Akron is also accused of failing to conduct unbiased investigations and of not disciplining misconduct in the Akron Police Department, creating a “culture of violence.”
Attorney Imokhai Okolo and his client, Battles, are seeking an unspecified amount in compensation and damages to be determined during a jury trial, along with punitive damages, attorney fees and costs.
“The City of Akron and leadership within the department need to take action to hold officers accountable for this violence,” Okolo wrote in a statement to the Akron Beacon Journal. “Without this accountability, officers will continue to be empowered to inflict violence on people in our community.”
The City of Akron declined to comment as this is a pending case. Judge Pamela Barker is presiding over the case.
