Hollywood actress Cynthia Erivo performed as Jesus in a revival of “Jesus Christ Superstar” at the Hollywood Bowl, featuring a three-night run that ended on August 3, 2025.
The production, directed by Sergio Trujillo is facing criticism as some believed that its blaspheme for a woman to play the role of Christ while some opined that her black skin color is a “No” for the role she played.
@meklitTO wrote: “Casting a woman as Jesus Christ and with a conflicted character is a calculated blasphemy. Hollywood knows exactly what it’s doing and it’ll keep doing it.”
@9mm_smg stated: “They made a bald woman who looks like a sleep paralysis demon Jesus because they hate you, and they hate Christians.”
@TheEbonyMaw queried: Lots of people are like “why would they pick a black woman to play Jesus???”
“Yeah man, Jesus Christ Superstar is intended to be sacrilegious. It’s not a Christian play. The only reason I know this is because I (unfortunately) used to be a theater kid in school.”
@Misfitpatriot: “This really is demonic and unlike the other retards on here it has nothing to do with her being black or looking weird. Casting a female to play Christ isn’t like making the silver surfer a chick in the new fantastic 4 movie. It’s blasphemy”
The footage of the actress playing as Jesus in Hollywood Bowl’s Jesus Christ Superstar and Adam Lambert as Judas is under heavy criticism
