Panic in Lagos as Three Councillors, One Vice Chairman Die Within Two Months of Swearing-In

Lagos State has been thrown into mourning and confusion following the shocking deaths of four elected female officials, all within just two months of being sworn into office .

The tragic wave began with Councillor Oluwakemi Rufai of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, who passed away on August 13, 2025, barely 17 days into her tenure. Just days later, Councillor Zainab Shotayo of Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA died on August 18, 2025, only 22 days after her swearing-in.

The grief deepened in September when Vice Chairman Oluremi Ajose of Badagry West LCDA died on September 20, 2025, 55 days after her inauguration. A day later, on September 21, 2025, Councillor Basirat Mayabikan of Ward F, Somolu Local Government, also passed away, just 56 days into office.

The string of sudden deaths, coming in such quick succession, has sparked panic and raised concerns across Lagos State’s political landscape. Residents and stakeholders are now questioning the unsettling trend, describing it as unprecedented in the history of local governance.
