Spain Orders Closure Of Schools, Braces For Extreme Weather

Authorities in eastern Spain have ordered the closure of schools, universities, and public spaces as the region braces for extreme weather that has prompted a red alert for flooding.

According to the Spain’s national weather agency, AEMET, described the weather as a “very complicated situation” in the Mediterranean region.

AEMET, has issued an “extraordinary danger” warning for the provinces of Valencia, Castellón, and Tarragona. In the city of Valencia, local officials announced that all schools, libraries, parks, and even cemeteries would be closed on Monday. The move is a preventative measure to ensure public safety as the region endures heavy rainfall.

The current situation has heightened anxieties in a region still recovering from the catastrophic floods of October 2024, which killed over 230 people and caused billions of euros in damage.

Residents continue to protest, accusing officials of failing to provide timely alerts.

Authorities have urged residents to avoid non-essential travel and to follow the instructions of emergency services.
