Pyramids FC have intensified negotiations to extend the contract of Congolese striker Mahmoud Mayele. The Egyptian club has tabled a three-year deal that would keep the forward at the club until 2028.
Mayele has been a key figure in Pyramids’ rise since joining from Tanzania’s Young Africans SC in the summer of 2023. His impact has been both immediate and lasting. In 2024, he scored the winning goal in the Egyptian Cup final against ZED, delivering the club’s first-ever domestic title.
His influence extended beyond the local scene. Mayele played a crucial role in Pyramids’ historic CAF Champions League triumph last season — their first continental crown. He found the net in both the semi-final against Orlando Pirates and the final against Mamelodi Sundowns, finishing as the tournament’s top scorer.
The 28-year-old further made headlines on the global stage, scoring a hat-trick in the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Club Final against a star-studded Al Ahli side, securing Pyramids’ first international trophy.
Retaining Mayele is seen as vital to the continuation of the club’s ambitious project. He came close to leaving last season, with Saudi side Al Fateh showing strong interest. A deal, however, failed to materialise as both clubs couldn’t agree on a transfer fee. Pyramids reportedly valued him at $3 million, a figure Al Fateh considered too high, despite already agreeing on personal terms with the player worth $1.5 million per season.
While the financial details of Pyramids’ latest offer have not been disclosed, expectations are that Mayele’s new salary will exceed the figure previously proposed by Al Fateh.
Discussions are ongoing, and both parties are said to be optimistic about reaching an agreement soon.
