A German doctor went on trial in Berlin Monday, accused of murdering 15 of his patients who were under palliative care. The prosecutor’s office brought charges against the 40-year-old doctor “for 15 counts of murder with premeditated malice and other base motives” before a Berlin state court. The prosecutor’s office is seeking not only a conviction and a finding of “particularly serious” guilt, but also a lifetime ban on practicing medicine and subsequent preventive detention. Murder charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison. If a court establishes that the defendant bears particularly severe guilt, that means he wouldn’t be eligible for...

UN Estimates 14 Million Children Did Not Receive A Single Vaccine In 2024.
More than 14 million children did not receive a single vaccine last year — about the same number as the year before — according to U.N. health officials. Nine countries accounted for more than half of those unprotected children. In their annual estimate of global vaccine coverage, released Tuesday, the World Health Organization and UNICEF said about 89% of children under 1-year-old got a first dose of the diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough vaccine in 2024, the same as in 2023. About 85% completed the three-dose series, up from 84% in 2023. Officials acknowledged, however, that the collapse of international...
Official Arrest Thai Woman For Blackmailing Monks With Thousands Of Videos After Sex
Thai police have arrested a woman who allegedly had sexual relations with monks, and then used photos and videos of the acts to extort money from them. The woman, who police are calling “Ms Golf”, had sex with at least nine monks, police said at a press conference on Tuesday. They believe she received around 385 million baht ($11.9m; £8.8m) over the past three years. Investigators who searched her house found more than 80,000 photos and videos used to blackmail the monks, the police spokesman said. This scandal is the latest to rock Thailand’s much revered Buddhist institution, which in...
Chinese Court Sentences A Japanese Man To More Than 3 Years In Prison On Espionage Charges
A Japanese man was sentenced Wednesday to three and a half years in prison in China on espionage charges, according to the Japanese embassy in Beijing. The embassy did not identify the man, who has been detained since March 2023. Japan’s Kyodo News Agency described him as a man in his 60s and an employee of Astellas Pharma Inc., a major Japanese pharmaceutical company. The man was charged with espionage in August and his first hearing was held in November but no details were released. The Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People’s Court did not immediately make an announcement after handing down...
University Of Michigan Faces Federal Investigation After Arrest Of 2 Chinese Scientists
The University of Michigan is under federal scrutiny after two Chinese scientists linked to the school were separately charged with smuggling biological materials into the United States. The Education Department on Tuesday opened an investigation into the university’s foreign funding, citing the pair of cases that were announced days apart in June. It said the “highly disturbing criminal charges” raise concerns about Michigan’s vulnerability to national security threats from China. “Despite the University of Michigan’s history of downplaying its vulnerabilities to malign foreign influence, recent reports reveal that UM’s research laboratories remain vulnerable to sabotage,” said Paul Moore, chief investigative counsel of the department. President Donald...
Sunderland Eye Swiss Midfielder Granit Xhaka
Sunderland are exploring a move for Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka. Xhaka has three years left on his Leverkusen contract and could be allowed to leave this summer. Sunderland face competition from Saudi Arabian side NEOM FC. The newly promoted club has already spent £95 million this summer. If Sunderland can pull this off, it would be a massive signing. Xhaka is no stranger to the Premier League, having previously played for Arsenal. The Swiss international has made 99 appearances for Leverkusen, scoring six goals and providing nine assists. He was part of the squad that won the Bundesliga and...
US Sends Third-Country Deportees Under Secrecy To The Small African Kingdom Of Eswatini
The United States has sent five men to the small African nation of Eswatini in an expansion of the Trump administration’s largely secretive third-country deportation program, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said Tuesday. The U.S. has already deported eight men to another African nation, South Sudan, after the Supreme Court lifted restrictions on sending people to countries where they have no ties. The South Sudanese government has declined to say where those men are after they arrived nearly two weeks ago. In a late-night post on X, Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said the men sent to Eswatini, who are citizens of Vietnam,...

Liverpool Reject £58m Bayern Munich Offer For Diaz
Liverpool have rejected a £58.6m opening offer from Bayern Munich for forward Luis Diaz. The German club approached Liverpool earlier this month but were told Diaz was not for sale. That position was reinforced on Tuesday as Liverpool turned down the Bundesliga side’s first bid for the 28-year-old Colombia international. Liverpool value Diaz, whose contract expires in the summer of 2027, in excess of £87m as a key member of Arne Slot’s squad. He scored 22 goals for club and country last season, with 13 of those in the Premier League as Liverpool won the title by 10 points. Diaz...
