Álvaro Arbeloa denies reports of dressing-room disrespect at Real Madrid

Reports in Spain have claimed that several Spanish players at Real Madrid referred to head coach Álvaro Arbeloa as “the cone” while on the bench during matches.

According to reports from COPE, some players allegedly mocked Arbeloa’s tactical instructions and questioned his managerial ability behind the scenes.

The reports suggested comments included:

“Look at the cone, he has no idea.”

“Look at the cone, how terrible he is.”

It was also claimed that Arbeloa became aware of the alleged remarks through members of his staff.

However, Arbeloa has strongly denied the accusations and defended both his relationship with the squad and the professionalism of his players.

Speaking publicly on the matter, he said:

“It’s a lie that the players are unprofessional, that they’ve disrespected me. It’s absolutely false. Just as false is the claim that some of them aren’t playing because of problems with me.

“I’m the one ultimately responsible for the fact that the season won’t be up to par. But I’ve been here for four months and I’m very proud of my players of  how they’ve welcomed me and of where we came from.

“It’s clear that frustration and anger can lead you into situations you don’t want. But now, let’s focus on the game. That’s what we need to concentrate on now.”

Arbeloa was appointed Real Madrid head coach in January 2026 following the departure of Xabi Alonso. The former Real Madrid defender stepped up from the club’s youth setup and has since overseen a difficult first campaign in senior management.
