Pep Guardiola has reportedly decided to step down as manager of Manchester City at the end of the season, bringing an end to one of the most successful managerial eras in English football history.
According to multiple reports in England, Guardiola has already informed key figures within the club and members of the squad about his decision to leave. Manchester City’s final Premier League match of the season against Aston Villa is expected to be his last game in charge before departing the Etihad with immediate effect.
Guardiola’s expected departure would conclude a remarkable 10-year spell at Manchester City, during which he transformed the club into one of the dominant forces in world football. Since arriving in 2016, the Spaniard has delivered multiple Premier League titles, domestic cups, and the club’s first-ever UEFA Champions League trophy, while also leading City to a historic treble-winning campaign.
Former City assistant coach Enzo Maresca has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Guardiola. Talks between Manchester City and Maresca have reportedly taken place in recent days, with the Italian manager said to have expressed both his interest in the role and his availability to return to the club.
Maresca is highly regarded within the Manchester City hierarchy following his previous spell as part of Guardiola’s coaching staff. Reports suggest City view him as a manager capable of continuing the club’s football philosophy and long-term project if Guardiola’s exit is officially confirmed.
While Manchester City have yet to make an official announcement regarding Guardiola’s future, preparations for a managerial transition are understood to already be underway behind the scenes.
