Syrian Authorities Arrest Ex-Intelligence Officer Tied To A Leaked Video Of A Massacre
Syrian authorities said Friday they have arrested a former intelligence officer who appeared in a video leaked four years ago that purportedly showed him and his comrades fatally shooting dozens of people during the country’s civil war. Amjad Yousef was arrested in the central province of Hama, where he had been hiding, the Interior Ministry said, and posted a photo of him in a striped prison uniform. Since insurgents ousted former President Bashar Assad in December 2024, dozens of members of his security agencies that were blamed for atrocities during the conflict have been arrested. Assad fled to Russia. The...
Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu Says He Was Treated For Prostate Cancer And Is Now Healthy
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Friday that he has undergone treatment for prostate cancer in his first public acknowledgment of the diagnosis. He said that roughly a year and a half ago he had prostate surgery. Then two and a half months ago, his doctors discovered and treated a small tumor at Jerusalem’s Hadassah Hospital with radiation therapy. That was not announced at the time. “I requested to delay its publication by two months so that it would not be released at the height of the war” against Iran, the 76-year-old Israeli leader said, to prevent “more false propaganda...
Former Colorado Funeral Home Owner Sentenced To 30 Years In Case That Forced Industry Crackdown
A former Colorado funeral home owner who helped her ex-husband hide nearly 200 decomposing bodies was sentenced to 30 years in prison Friday in a case that forced the state to clamp down on an industry plagued by repeated scandal and notoriously lax oversight. Carie Hallford faced between 25 and 35 years in prison under a plea agreement. Some family members of those whose bodies were left to rot had urged Judge Eric Bentley to impose the maximum sentence. But the judge said Carie Hallford made credible claims of being a victim of domestic violence and her ex-husband, Jon Hallford,...
Congolese Refugees Return From Burundi To Take Advantage Of Improved Security
Thousands of Congolese refugees in Burundi have returned to their homes across the border in eastern Congo following the withdrawal of Rwandan-backed rebels from a key town. Some 470 people were in the latest batch to cross the border after fleeing violence in and around Uvira nearly four months ago. They sought shelter in the Busuma refugee camp in Burundi’s Buhumuza province, and were among at least 33,000 Congolese who have returned home as of March, according to the U.N. The M23 rebels, who last year seized wide areas of North and South Kivu on the border with Rwanda, later...

Why A Bitter Political Feud Has Left A Former Zambian President Unburied 10 Months After His Death
A feud over his funeral has meant the body of former Zambian President Edgar Lungu still hasn’t been buried nearly a year after he died in a South African hospital. Lungu’s family wanted to bury him in South Africa because of his bitter political rivalry with current Zambian leader Hakainde Hichilema. But the Zambian government has gone to court to win custody of Lungu’s remains so that it can repatriate them for a state funeral. A new twist in the monthslong drama came Wednesday when the Zambian government said it took custody of the body with the assistance of South...
